Are there three separate scholarships?

Yes, there's one contest for video, another for design and a third for radio. Each contest has two levels: one at the high school level and one at the college level. Be sure that you apply at the appropriate place on the landing page and select the correct category when filling out your application information.

Who should apply?

High school juniors and seniors who will complete graduation requirements by or before July 31, 2017 or 2018; and college students who will still be attending school through July 2017. The winning applicants will receive a scholarship toward the school of their choice (college, university, junior college or technical school).

How much is the scholarship?

FOR THE VIDEO CONTEST: The first-place finisher will receive a scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Second-place finisher will receive $2,000. Third-place finisher will receive $1,000.

FOR THE DESIGN CONTEST: The first-place finisher will receive a scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

FOR THE RADIO CONTEST: The first place finisher will receive a scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of Mazda, U-Haul and iHeartRadio.

Can we apply in teams?

Yes, you can apply in teams (but no more than 4 people per team). If your team wins, the prize will be evenly distributed among the members.

Why is there no footage accepted of texting while driving for the video competition?

We hope it's obvious to you - this whole campaign is about anti-texting, anti-distractions and the last thing we want is for you or someone in your film to be texting while driving a car. However, there are ways to get around it. For example, you could pan down to someone in the driver's seat texting (though they're not actually driving a car at the time. The car could be parked; just don't show outside the window.) Use your imagination. Along those same lines, all passengers must wear seat belts. The main point is that we want you to be safe!

How long should the video be?

Videos should be either exactly 25 seconds or 55 seconds in length. If your video is selected as a winner, it will be turned into a PSA by the Ad Council and we will add a five second end frame to round it out to 30 or 60 seconds.

Please keep all your unused video footage taken during the making of your file. We may need it if you're selected as a winner.

What about music?

If you're using music in your video, please be SURE to use only original music that you have permission to use, or music that is provided on the site (under the Resources tab). Of course, you don't have to use music at all, should you choose.

Be careful of having brand names in your videos, billboard designs or radio spots. Why?

Be careful to avoid filming brand names in your video and creating designs with brand names. For instance, don't shoot your film or create a design with a Starbucks or Target in the background and their sign/logo emblazoned all over your footage. Reason being, if your video or design is selected as the winner, it will be turned into a PSA by the Ad Council and shared with 1,600 TV stations across the country. Likewise, the winning design will be displayed on Clear Channel Outdoor billboards throughout the nation. We'd have to block out the brand names on something distributed publically (because this work is run as a donation to the Ad Council, NHTSA and PYL, and there's a general rule that an ad/billboard design can't run in donated media if it has a logo in it). Don’t be too worried about cell phones, cars, and things like that – as long as the logo isn’t blatantly in your face. Make sense?

Can you enter the video, billboard and radio contests?

Yes! You are welcome to enter all contests as long as the entry follows the requirements.

Is there anything else?

You bet! For the video contest, the Ad Council will edit the winning 1st place videos into a PSA and will distribute to 1,600 TV stations nationwide during a full-year cycle. For the design contest, Clear Channel Outdoor will feature the winning work on billboards throughout the U.S.

U-Haul will generously provide all six (6) first-place finishers from all three (3) contests with a moving expense gift valid for 12 months after receipt.
